Product description
Dr. Kendall's latest work contains a transcript of his last Sunday morning series in Westminster Chapel, London, of 35 sermons on the parables of Jesus.
It is subtitled: 'A guide to understanding and applying the stories of Jesus'. The book is simply a record of what was said on the parables with little editing.
The advantage of this approach is that the heart and passion of the preacher is evident. The disadvantage is that there are a number of factual errors (that ought to have been picked up by the editor of the text, or readers of the manuscript), which have been retained. Examples of these include: Spurgeon was not turned down by Regent's Park College when he considered training there for the pastoral ministry, p.33; the number of converts in the Revivals listed on page 37 appear to be much smaller than evangelical historians have traditionally assumed; John Robinson, former Anglican curate, was an Independent (Congregational) minister - not a Baptist (p,84); the doctrine of purgatory (p.286) was not a recent invention in the last few hundred years - its roots are found in ideas taught in some early Fathers and defined in the RC Church in Councils in 1274 and 1439. However, these are minor issues in the overall context of this book.
These sermons are suitable to read for devotional purposes and possess a freshness of approach that was greatly appreciated. I would warmly commend this book not only to 'the people in the pew' but also to fellow pastors and preachers who have probably preached on many of the parables of Jesus. You do not need to agree with Dr. Kendall in all of his interpretations of the text, though he will certainly make you think and cause you to seek the Lord with a renewed passion.
