Product description
Over thirty years after her death in 1972, Mahalia Jackson rightly remains the most famous and the greatest single practitioner of Gospel music. After facing controversies which saw her banned from performing in certain venues, an appearance on Studs Terkel's TV saw a change in fortune when she managed to gain the approval of intellectuals and critics alike, winning 1951's French disque d'or with 'I Can Put My Trust In Jesus', successfully following up with Kenneth Morris's 'Dig A Little Deeper', both featured on this compilation.
Jackson's music, as presented here, always retained the magisterial dignity and spiritual force which connected so directly to a wide audience. This is evident in her moving treatment of 'The Lord's Prayer' which was a highlight of the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival (immortalized in the movie Jazz On A Summer's Day) and her Top 40 hit 'Rusty Old Halo', both of which are also featured on this collection.
